Audience Research

Why do people go to the Cinema?

One of the main reasons someone may watch a British Social Realism film is that they identify with a character or their situation or for surveillance. This is because it's easy for the audience to consciously or unconsciously relate to the characters.

Blulmer and Katz say there are 4 reasons why someone consumes a media text, including visiting the cinema.

Diversion: To escape the routine or as a means of entertainment
Socialisation: To discuss with others (friends, family, classmates etc)
Surveillance: To be educated or to find out information
Identification: If you admire a certain actor/actress wanting to like a character in the film
